Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze Yell 'Cut'

The four-year marriage of "Lost in Translation" director Sofia Coppola and "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" director Spike Jonze is over, gossip columnist Liz Smith reports.

The news confirms much of the talk of the past few months -- that not all was well with the couple. Back in September, Jonze, 33, was absent from the New York City premiere of his wife's critically acclaimed "Translation," PEOPLE reported.

"There are some problems," a friend of Coppola's told the magazine at the time. (Coppola's rep, however, denied the news.)

The pair, who married on June 26, 1999, lived together in Los Angeles's Los Feliz neighborhood. After Coppola, 32, was finished with promoting "Translation," starring Bill Murray and heavily favored for Oscar recognition, she was planning "to go someplace (with Jonze) to talk things through," said the friend.

Jonze got his start directing music videos, including those for Daft Punk's first single "Da Funk," featuring a talking dog, and Weezer for its "Happy Days"-themed clip, "Buddy Holly." In 2001, he directed the video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice."

Coppola, the daughter of "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now" director Francis Ford Coppola, got her start acting in her father's Mafia's epics, first as the baby in the christening scene during the climax of 1972's "Godfather, Part II," then as the replacement for Winona Ryder, as Mary Corleone (daughter of Al Pacino's Michael Corleone), in 1990's critically lambasted "Godfather, Part III."
