FCC Calls for Probe of Jackson Stunt

The FCC is ready to investigate Janet Jackson's breast intentions.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell came out punching on Monday over the pop star's breast-baring Super Bowl halftime performance, vowing his agency will investigate the "deplorable stunt," reports CNN.

"Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration," Powell said in a statement. "Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt. Our nation's children, parents and citizens deserve better.

"I have instructed the commission to open an immediate investigation into last night's broadcast. Our investigation will be thorough and swift."

During Sunday's halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII (which was produced by MTV), the snap-on bodice of Jackson's leather gladiator outfit "accidentally" got torn off by Justin Timberlake, revealing her right breast, which just happened to have a silver star attached to it.

Nearly everyone involved with the halftime show sought to distance themselves from the incident, and the NFL immediately condemned the performance.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, National Football League executive vice president, said in a statement -- one of many issued after the incident. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show."

CBS also said it "deeply regrets the incident," and MTV proclaimed its innocence, saying, "The tearing of Janet Jackson's costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance."

Timberlake, 22, offered his apology, too. "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," his statement said. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."

There has been no official statement from Jackson, 37, but her representative told MTV News that she apologizes for the incident.

Despite its official apology, MTV on its Web site went ahead and trumpeted the "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional" incident after the fact, CNN reports, quoting the Web page's headline, "Janet Jackson Got Nasty at the MTV-Produced Super Bowl Halftime Show."

In its report, the MTV site said: "Jaws across the country hit the carpet at exactly the same time. You know what we're talking about ... Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and a kinky finale that rocked the Super Bowl to its core."

Jackson's peek-a-boob took place during Timberlake's song "Rock Your Body," in which he assures his dance partner that he will "have you naked by the end of this song."

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime," said the NFL's Browne.
