JOINED: Speaking of Las Vegas, CBS's hit franchise "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" -- which began in Sin City, spread to southern Florida with "CSI: Miami" and now is preparing to hit the Big Apple in the fall with "CSI: New York" -- has a new star. Joining the latest spinoff is Melina Kanakaredes, from NBC's family drama "Providence," AP reports. Kanakaredes will play a workaholic detective, according to sources close to the show.

DIED: Jan Berry, member of the 1960s California surf-pop duo Jan & Dean, died Friday, Reuters reports. Berry, who would have been 63 on April 3, reportedly suffered a seizure at his Brentwood, Calif., home and was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Berry had been in poor health since a 1966 automobile accident that had paralyzed him for a year and halted Jan & Dean's career. The twosome were known for such songs as "Surf City," "Dead Man's Curve" and "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena." ... Actress Jan Sterling, 82, a star of Hollywood's film noir movies of the 1940s and '50s, died Friday, AP reports. She starred opposite Kirk Douglas in Billy Wilder's controversial film "Ace in the Hole" (later released as "The Big Carnival"). ... Adan Sanchez, the 19-year-old son of balladeer Marcelino "Chalino" Sanchez, was killed in a car accident in northwestern Mexico on Sunday, AP reports. Adan, a resident of Los Angeles, was traveling in a car with two others when a tire blew and the car rolled over. The other occupants were taken to a hospital and treated. No other vehicles were involved. At 19, Adan had already recorded nine albums.
ARRESTED: "Stop All the World Now" singer Howie Day, 23, was arrested in Wisconsin last week when he allegedly locked one woman in a bathroom and broke the cell phone of another, after one of them spurned his advances, AP reports. The incident, which took place at a concert for the Barenaked Ladies that Day was opening, occurred last Wednesday on his tour bus. Day was charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct and taken to jail. He was freed on bail Thursday. Day is due in court April 1.
