SINGING FOR HIS SUPPER
Talk about a big tip. Billy Joel sang three songs at the recent black-tie opening of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City, and as he was stepping off the stage, a party guest handed him a note written on a napkin, saying he'd donate $5,000 to City Harvest, a food rescue program benefiting the needy, if the Piano Man would perform one more tune. Joel sang "Just the Way You Are" to a cheering crowd that included daughter Alexa Ray and girlfriend Kate Lee.
GOOD SPORT
Platinum-selling rapper Jay-Z hip-hopped into the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City late one recent night and was spotted leaving the casino at about 3 a.m. Was he just having fun, or trying to build up his cash reserves to buy the NBA franchise the New Jersey Nets? At his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert last week, Jay-Z told the crowd, "I'm in heavy, heavy negotiations to bring the Nets to Brooklyn."
CAUGHT IN THE ACT
Spotted recently:
Nicole Kidman, squeezing in a workout at the pool at The Sports Center at New York City's Chelsea Piers. According to the center's public relations manager Damon Bayles, Kidman and an unidentified companion (not beau Lenny Kravitz) snagged day passes for the fitness center and headed for the pool, where Kidman swam laps for about 30 minutes before heading to the locker rooms.
