Nicole Meets with New Iraq Ambassador
Gillerman says Kidman, 36, who wore a simple black dress, sat between the Iraqi ambassador and New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman, and expressed a genuine interest in Negroponte's new post and world politics in general.
"She was very interested in ... how he saw his new job – she asked him how he felt about it, about the possible implications of the prisoner photos and how the United States is perceived in Arab world," said Gillerman.
"She asked several questions about the pictures – she also asked the Jordanian ambassador (H.R.H. Prince Zeid Raad Al Zeid Hussein) about how they're being perceived in the Arab world," said Gillerman, who called the star "a fascinating tapestry ... I was impressed with her curiosity and knowledge."
Others in attendance included United Nations ambassadors from Australia, Denmark and Canada, as well as filmmaker Sydney Pollack, who is currently directing Kidman in The Interpreter, about a UN employee (Kidman) enmeshed in a murder plot.
"I thought since it was being shot at the U.N., it would be appropriate to have her over and meet real-life ambassadors with a secret hope of me and my colleagues that we'd land a part in the movie," Gillerman quipped.
"I'm half-joking," he conceded, "but the possibility of getting cameo role playing myself did come up!"
