Shrek 2 Really Green at the Box Office
It's easy being green: Shrek 2, which featured the return of the friendly green ogre, shattered box-office records over the weekend, raking in $125.3 million over five days, according to studio estimates.
That topped the previous record holder, Best Picture Oscar winner The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which hauled in $124.1 million. Shrek 2 also generated more money at Saturday's box office than any movie has ever earned on a single day, about $44.8 million. (Final figures will be available Monday.)
A sequel to the 2001 hit (which grossed $267.6 million and won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature), Shrek 2 became the second movie in history – after 2002's Spider-Man and its $114.8 million take – to make more than $100 million its first weekend.
As for the movies Shrek left in its wake, last week's No. 1, Troy, starring Brad Pitt, slipped to second place, while Van Helsing, with Hugh Jackman, crossed the $100-million mark.
The weekend's Top 10 movies, according to studio estimates, were as follows:
1. Shrek 2, $104.3 million
2. Troy, $23.8 million
3. Van Helsing, $10.1 million
4. Mean Girls, $6.9 million
5. Man on Fire, $3.5 million
6. Breakin' All the Rules, $2.8 million
7. 13 Going on 30, $2.5 million
8. New York Minute, $1.1 million
