PLANNED: At least two more Shrek sequels are on the way, following last week's powerhouse opening of Shrek 2. "It wasn't really advisable to start working on three and four until we knew that we actually had something in two, and certainly this weekend confirmed that we do," Ann Daly, the head of DreamWorks animation, tells Reuters. Opening in a record 4,163 theaters last Wednesday, the computer-animated satire made $129 million in its first five days, the most ever for a mid-week release. Shrek 2 also set a new benchmark as the biggest animated debut of all time, topping the $70 million bow of last year's Finding Nemo, and marks the strongest 2004 opening so far, surpassing the $89.3 million of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.
CAST: Matt Damon, 33, and Amanda Peet, 32, will team to star in Syriana, described by the Hollywood Reporter as a timely geopolitical thriller inspired by real-life CIA agent Robert Baer's memoirs, See No Evil: The True Story of a Foot Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism. Damon's Ocean's 11 costar George Clooney, 42, one of the film's producers, is in advanced talks to play Baer.
VOWED: David Beckham's wife Victoria Beckham tells Marie Claire magazine that her husband has never been unfaithful to her, despite the claims of two women who said they had affairs with him. "Through all of this, I feel really sorry for David because it's his name that's been dragged through it, and he's done nothing wrong," says the former Spice Girl, 29. "He's always been faithful and nothing has changed at all. I can honestly say that I am really lucky to have him."
REVIVED: After an 18-year hiatus, American Bandstand, which kicked off in 1957, is coming back, with producer Dick Clark, 75, joining forces with American Idol producer Simon Fuller to revive the music show for summer 2005. "We think there's a great opportunity to utilize television for the promotion of today's music and put some dancing in it, and run a competition and hopefully come up with a hit," Clark tells Reuters.
