A federal judge set a Sept. 20 trial date for Larry Stewart (no relation to Martha), who was indicted earlier this month on two counts of perjury.
Prosecutors say Larry Stewart lied when he testified that he had participated in ink-analysis testing of a stock portfolio worksheet prepared by Martha's stockbroker Peter Bacanovic. The sheet was used as evidence the case, which concerned Martha's lying to federal investigators probing a questionable stock sale.
Both Bacanovic and Martha Stewart were convicted. They're due back in court for sentencing July 8.
The government contends that Larry Stewart also lied when he said he was familiar with a proposal for a book about ink analysis that was to be written by two other Secret Service workers, the Associated Press reports.
After the hearing, Larry Stewart's lawyer, Judith Wheat, told reporters her client was accurate when he testified that he "observed, participated and reviewed" the testing of the worksheet.
"He stands behind the work he did in this case, and he stands behind the testimony he gave in this case," Wheat said. "It may be the government just is not aware of all the things that Mr. Stewart did."
In related news, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. and the Style Network announced Wednesday that the TV series Martha Stewart Living – which has stopped filming until her future is decided – will air in reruns on the cable network weekdays at 8 p.m. ET beginning this month.
As part of the agreement, a statement said, the companies will also produce four new original programming specials about weddings.
