David Bowie underwent emergency heart surgery for a severely blocked artery late last month but is now recovering and hopes to return to work in August, according to a publicist for the veteran rock star.
The London-born "Ziggy Stardust" singer (real name: David Robert Hayward-Jones), 57, sought treatment in a German hospital June 25 after complaining of a pinched nerve during a European concert tour, the rep, Mitch Schneider, said in a statement. The entertainer had been playing at the Hurricane Festival in Sheesen, Germany.
Bowie underwent an angioplasty operation and "was able to leave the clinic early this week," Schneider said, adding that the musician "is now at home in New York convalescing with his wife and daughter and hopes to start work next month."
Bowie has been married to model Iman since 1992. Their daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, will turn 4 next month.
Only two days before his surgery, Bowie had been forced to cut short a concert in Prague after playing for an hour and telling fans he had nerve problems in is shoulder, reports Reuters. Bowie's remaining 11 European concert dates have been canceled.
"I'm so pissed off because the last 10 months of this tour have been so ... fantastic. Can't wait to be fully recovered and get back to work again. I tell you what, though, I won't be writing a song about this one," Bowie said in the statement.
