Bono to Help Take Spider-Man to Broadway
ORDERED: Former Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, 36, was sentenced to six months in a drug program on Thursday after pleading no contest to driving under the influence in Los Angeles, reports Reuters. Weiland, who now fronts the band Velvet Revolver, also was placed on probation and ordered to repay the owner of a parked vehicle he rammed shortly before his October arrest. He previously was placed in a live-in detoxification program after a May 2003 arrest for heroin possession. In 1999, he served jail time for repeatedly violating his probation on drug charges and for failing to complete drug rehab.
EXPECTED: Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, 44, and his wife, Alden, 37, a former real estate broker, are expecting twins in December, PEOPLE reports. Their son, E.J., is 1. Lagasse also has two grown daughters from a previous marriage.
DIED: Motown recording artist and songwriter Syreeta Wright, 58, who collaborated with ex-husband Stevie Wonder in writing several hits including "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and "If You Really Love Me", died at her home Tuesday after battling breast cancer, reports the Associated Press. She was married to Wonder from 1970-72 and was also known for her hit duet with Billy Preston, "With You I'm Born Again," from the 1979 film Fast Break.
HIRED: Comedian Garry Shandling, 54, will host the 56th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19, to be broadcast on ABC. It's Shandling's second time running the Emmy show as solo host; his first time was in 2000. Nominations for TV's top honors will be announced Thursday.
YANKED: George Michael, 41, is closing down the chatroom on his Web site, after "fans" complained on it that he looks overweight and that they don't like his new album. In a message posted on his site, the British pop star said: "There are plenty of places to read people slagging each other off, but I wasn't trying to create one in opening the forum. Those of you that want to carry on the media's work will have to do it somewhere else I suppose." He signed off: "Sorry guys, but that's the way it goes. ... Peace and Love ... or nothing at all."
