WEEK AHEAD: Ashlee Simpson Stepping Out
SUNDAY, JULY 18: If you're not a big Hollywood movie star, maybe someday you can at least hope to be the regular-schmo best friend of a big Hollywood movie star. That's the story behind HBO's new comedy, Entourage, which follows the exploits of fictional pretty-boy actor Vince Chase from Queens (played by Adrien Grenier) and his group of needy hangers-on (including Matt Dillon's brother Kevin as – get this – Chase's struggling-actor half-brother). The eight-episode series is loosely based on the life of one of its executive producers, Mark Wahlberg, who knows a little something about being a rags-to-riches success story – and bringing his friends along for the ride.
TUESDAY, JULY 20: With the release of her debut album Autobiography, Ashlee Simpson is out to show she's no carbon copy of her older, poppier and blonder sister Jessica. Already showing her quirky personality on her own reality show – which drew 2.9 million viewers when it debuted last month – the former 7th Heaven star is aiming for Billboard stardom and a more rocking edge. Her "Pieces of Me" single is already a hit – but does she know her chicken from her tuna?
FRIDAY, JULY 23: He was the butt of Jimmy Fallon's jokes on Saturday Night Live, but former Access Hollywood anchor Pat O'Brien's current situation isn't a laughing matter: He's heading to court to face his soon-to-be-former employer, NBC Universal, who sued to prevent him from promoting his new half-hour syndicated entertainment show, The Insider, while he's still under contract until Aug. 31. (O'Brien's Insider premieres on Sept. 13.) So far, Los Angeles judge Andria Richey has refused to grant the network a temporary restraining order against O'Brien. And as for O'Brien's feelings about his new gig, he gleefully told the Associated Press: "You'll never hear me ask what someone is wearing again."
Also on Friday, Courtney Love is due in a New York City courtroom to face drug-possession charges – but with her recent hospitalization, it's anybody's guess whether she'll show up. For the past week, Love has been holed up in a private medical facility after checking out of New York's Bellevue Hospital Center for what her lawyer called a gynecological condition. (Love reportedly told police that she had had an abortion on July 8.) According to her attorney Michael Rosenstein, the singer "will 100 percent be back voluntarily before the jurisdiction to face any and all charges against her."
