Tom Cruise may have taken the box-office crown this weekend, but the bottom line for his new thriller, Collateral, was unimpressive when stacked up against previous opening weekend grosses for other summer fare.

The tepid $24.4 million for Collateral, which costars Jamie Foxx, coupled with a significant second-weekend ticket sales drop for The Manchurian Candidate (despite generally positive reviews and word of mouth) brings into question the potency of adult fare at the box-office during the warm-weather months.

Also taking a major hit was M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, whose business plunged a whopping 67 percent as bad word-of-mouth caught up with the poor reviews the movie received.

The drop is the steepest second-weekend slide by a box office champ this summer, notes Variety. Even the early-summer dud Van Helsing fell only 60 percent in its second weekend.

The Brittany Murphy romantic comedy Little Black Book, also opened to disappointing results, with $7 million.

On a more upbeat note, The Bourne Supremacy, starring Matt Damon, has earned $124.3 million after three weekends.

The weekend's Top 10, according to studio estimates, are as follows:

1. Collateral, $24.4 million
2. The Village, $16.6 million
3. The Bourne Supremacy, $14.1 million
4. The Manchurian Candidate, $10.8 million
5. Little Black Book, $7 million
6. I, Robot, $6.3 million
7. Spider-Man 2, $5.5 million
8. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, $3.2 million
9. A Cinderella Story, $3.05 million
10. Catwoman, $2.9 million
