Brook First to Go on Survivor: Vanuatu
It looked, however, as if the goner was going to be Chris Daugherty, a 34-year-old highway construction worker from South Vienna, Ohio. But Brook didn't know of an unseen alliance within his male Lopevi tribe. (The women's tribe is called Yasur.)
Following the meeting of the Tribal Council, Brook said, "I got beat, bottom line. Some of them got me. They got me good."
As for the island nation of Vanuatu, show host Jeff Probst explained that the region has a history of black magic, sorcery and tribal rituals and that they would have to pass muster with the locals before facing their challenges.
Local initiation rites tended to favor the men (Vanatu is apparently as chauvinistic as it is isolated) starting with the Vanuatu tribe chief offering each male a local drink known as kava while the women were left to watch.
A sacrificial pig ritual followed, with blood smeared on the men's faces, after which Brady Finta, a 33-year-old FBI agent from Huntington Beach, Calif., was chosen to scurry up a pig-fat coated pole to retrieve a good-luck stone.
Brady got the stone.
