After a long-distance relationship of more than four years, New York City-based Today show host Katie Couric and multimillionaire TV producer Tom Werner of Los Angeles split last week, a source tells PEOPLE.
"They're both really funny and really cerebral," says the source. "They traveled together, went everywhere. But (the relationship) ran its course. The distance had become untenable." (An NBC rep declined to comment on Couric's personal life.)
While they were together, Couric, 47, who has two daughters, Elinor, 13, and Caroline, 8, and Werner, who has three children from his previous marriage, usually saw each other twice a month. Werner, 54, a co-owner of the Boston Red Sox since 2002, has produced such TV series as The Cosby Show and That '70s Show.
The couple began dating in the summer of 2000. (Couric lost her husband, attorney Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998.) Couric met Werner, who had recently separated from his wife of 28 years, on a blind date arranged by her manager.
