REEVE REMEMBERED: About 100 family members and friends paid their respects to Christopher Reeve on Tuesday in a private ceremony at the family's Pound Ridge, N.Y., home. Plans for a larger-scale public memorial are due to be announced next week. "It is clear that Christopher Reeve has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, and that is the legacy he leaves behind," family spokesman Wesley Combs told Reuters. The actor-activist, 52, an ardent campaigner for stem-cell research after he was paralyzed in a near-fatal 1995 riding accident, died on Sunday in Northern Westchester Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home on Saturday during treatment for an infected bedsore wound.

KATIE'S COURTSHIP: After a long-distance relationship of more than four years, New York City-based Today show host Katie Couric, 47, and multimillionaire TV producer Tom Werner, 54, of Los Angeles split last week, a source told PEOPLE, saying that the relationship "ran its course. The distance had become untenable." An NBC rep declined to comment on Couric's personal life. The couple began dating in the summer of 2000.

LETOURNEAU TURN: Mary Kay Letourneau and the former student she went to prison for having sex with are engaged to be married, the ex-schoolteacher, sporting a ring, told Larry King on CNN Monday night. No date for the nuptials has been announced. Letourneau also said on Larry King Live that, at the time the 12-year-old Vili Fualaau was her student, she did not know that having sex with a sixth-grader was a felony. Letourneau was 34 when the relationship began, in 1996.

PETERSON PAUSE: The defense team in the Scott Peterson double-murder trial, which was expected to begin presenting its case Tuesday, was put on hold until next Monday. "Some legal issues have come up," Judge Alfred A. Delucchi said. Before making his announcement, the judge, who did not specify the reason for the delay, met with Peterson's attorneys and the prosecution in his chambers for more than half an hour. Sources familiar with the case say prosecutors asked for the delay to prepare a rebuttal based on new photos provided by the defense.

JULIA'S BABY TALK: Julia Roberts, who's six months pregnant with twins, opened up to Oprah Winfrey about her impending motherhood, in an episode of the daytime talk show that will air Nov. 4, PEOPLE reported. Roberts, 36, confirmed to Winfrey that she's expecting a boy and a girl, due in January. Though some things are out of her control – the kicking on the right side of her belly, or her changing laugh, which she says now makes her sound like a hearty truck driver – her pregnancy has been "very empowering," she told Winfrey.
