Mira Sorvino Gives Birth to a Girl

Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino gave birth to a girl Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles. Sorvino, 37, and husband Chris Backus, 23, who are not releasing their daughter's name, are now resting comfortably at home. "They're extremely happy," says a source close to the couple. It's their first child.

Sorvino and Backus married on June 11 of this year at the Santa Barbara, Calif., courthouse. The couple met at a friend's charades party in August of 2003.

"He walked into the kitchen looking for silverware. We saw each other and something made us want to talk to each other more," Sorvino told PEOPLE recently. Of her pregnancy, she added, "I am thrilled and scared and hope that I will make a good parent."

Sorvino, who is the daughter of actor Paul Sorvino, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Woody Allen's 1995 film Mighty Aphrodite. Backus has appeared on NBC's Will & Grace.
