Tommy Lee, who practically wrote the book on bad-boy rocker behavior, is now finding it a little tougher to crack the books.

The former Motley Crue drummer, 42, is filming his new NBC reality show, Tommy Lee Goes to College which tracks his experiences matriculating at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and he said at a press conference that his academic turn "is the total fish-out-of-water experience for me."

But his studying is "the real deal," he insists. "I'm playing catch-up since we jumped in (during) the middle of the semester." Shooting the series began last month and is expected to end this week.

And while horticulture suits Lee's fancy, he finds chemistry difficult. Another shock to hit him, according to Reuters: Facing a 6 a.m. wakeup call for drum practice with school's band. According to the Daily Nebraskan, Lee also claims: "I'm studying my a-- off."

As for why he didn't go to college at the age most people do, Lee says: "I was busy touring since the age of 17. So this is completely strange and bizarre, but a lot of fun and a lot of work."
