Santa Monica police have issued a warrant for the arrest of rap artist Young Buck in connection with the violence at Monday night's Vibe Awards.
Police said on Tuesday that a man they believe is Young Buck (real name: David Darnell Brown), 23, a protégé of rap artist 50 Cent, was caught on videotape stabbing Jimmy James Johnson, 26, who was taken to a local hospital. Johnson is in stable condition.
A rep for Interscope Records and 50 Cent did not return calls seeking comment.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m., as the show was winding down and dozens of people were sitting near the stage inside a hangar at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport. Johnson allegedly approached Dr. Dre while the rap superstar was on his way to the stage to accept a Vibe Award from Quincy Jones and Snoop Dogg. Johnson, who appeared to be asking for an autograph, allegedly punched Dr. Dre several times.
When private security guards subdued Johnson and moved him toward the stage, police said, the violence spread, with several unidentified men attempting to assault Johnson and throwing chairs at two uniformed Santa Monica police officers.
Police said the videotape shows three men holding knives, and that Brown is seen swinging a knife at Johnson's upper body while Johnson is looking away. Brown is seen holding a knife after the assault and was one of numerous fight participants pepper-sprayed by officers.
Brown, who police say fled the scene, was identified as a suspect Tuesday morning, and will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Police are investigating several other assault suspects, whom they declined to identify.
A police spokesman, in a press conference, said authorities are attempting to interview Dr. De. "We have a call into him. He has not responded just yet. We'll interview him at his earliest convenience," said the rep. As for the stabbing victim: "He's in stable condition. He suffered a collapsed lung in the initial assault."
