The Mean Girls star was being mean to herself. Lindsay Lohan tells Jane magazine that her relentless schedule led to exhaustion and landed her in the hospital for five days.

"I was overtired and working myself to death," the 18-year-old star says. "When you're young, you think you can just keep going and going."

Lohan first started looking ill Oct. 18 while she was filming Herbie: Fully Loaded and recording her debut album, Speak. Three days later she was admitted to L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where it was discovered that she was running a 103-degree fever. "She was wiped out when she went into the hospital," her publicist, Leslie Sloane, told PEOPLE at the time.

But the medically imposed work break was exactly what Lohan needed. "I couldn't work," she told Jane. "No one could bother me."

When Lohan first became ill, she went to the home of her boyfriend, That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama. "He tried to take care of me, and I'm screaming in the bedroom," Lohan said. She then went to her doctor, who directed her to the emergency room. Lohan and Valderrama split earlier this month.

Despite their breakup, Lohan is apparently hoping for the right relationship and in the not-too-distant future. "I want to get married young," she told Jane. "I want to be a young mom."

Speak is due out Dec. 7. "Rumors," the first single from the album, has been climbing the charts since its release earlier this month.
