Entertainment personality and longtime American Bandstand host Dick Clark has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Clark, 75, who is in a Los Angeles-area hospital, said he's recovering and expects to be up and around soon.

"The doctors tell me I should be back in the swing of things before too long so I'm hopeful to be able to make it to Times Square to help lead the country in bringing in the New Year once again," said Clark in a statement issued to PEOPLE.

Clark has been hosting the New Year's Rockin' Eve special from Times Square for the last 32 years.

The famously youthful Clark is one of music and TV's most enduring figures, having helped bring rock music to the mainstream with his televised dance party American Bandstand, which began in 1952 and helped promote the careers of Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Chubby Checker.

When asked how he stays up on current trends, Clark told PEOPLE last April: "You try to stay on top of what's going on … I read magazines and I listen to the radio all the time."

Otherwise, he said, "I'm not doing it different. I'm doing the same act."
