Gary Condit Denies Chandra Levy Affair

Former Congressman Gary Condit has denied having an affair with murdered intern Chandra Levy, contradicting allegations from police and Levy's family that he did, according to tapes obtained by the Today show.

The revelations come from testimony that was part of an $11 million defamation lawsuit Condit filed against Court TV and Vanity Fair reporter Dominick Dunne.

Asked to describe his relationship with Levy, a 24-year-old intern who disappeared in April 2001, Condit responded, "We were friends," according to a transcript of the tapes.

When asked if the pair's relationship ever become a romantic, Condit said, "No."

Condit, a married father of two, also denied ever visiting Levy's apartment or discussing marriage with the intern.

At the time of the investigation into Levy's disappearance, police sources said Condit admitted that the pair had been romantically involved. Levy's mother and aunt also said she told each of them she was having an affair with the then-California congressman.

Levy, who was missing for more than a year, was found dead in a Washington, D.C., park in May 2002. No one has been charged with her murder. The police and the FBI consider the investigation ongoing.
