Denise Richards, who gave birth to her second child on June 1, says she's not afraid of raising her two young children by herself.

"I can't worry about being a single parent," she tells PEOPLE. "I just want to be a good one."

The actress, who filed for divorce from Charlie Sheen in March, had her estranged husband by her side when she welcomed into the world their 6-lb. 10-oz. baby girl, Lola Rose, on June 1. "He wanted to be there. And she agreed to it," says a Richards pal. "But they're not getting back together."

Indeed, the parental togetherness was temporary: Since filing for divorce, Richards, 34, has been locked in a battle with Sheen, 39, over their children, Lola, and 1-year-old Sam. She wants full custody and spousal support; he wants joint custody without spousal support.

But Richards isn't letting the legal wrangling get in the way of parenting. By June 4, she was back at home, vying for Lola time with Sam; her mother, Joni, 51 (who came from San Diego to help and was also in the delivery room); and even neighbor Heather Locklear.

"I got a chance to hold (Lola). She's adorable," says Locklear, who is also friends with Sheen, her former Spin City costar.

Still, Richards will have her hands full when she returns to TV in the fall on UPN's Sex, Lies & Secrets. "I told her, 'You don’t have two kids, you have two babies!'" says Locklear. And, alas, only two hands.

But Richards's mother isn't worried. "Denise is a great mother," says Joni, "and a very strong woman."
