The end is all but here for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, once one of Hollywood's hottest and – many thought – steadiest couples.

On Aug. 19, Judge Jill Robbins, a retired magistrate, granted Pitt and Aniston's divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to records made available Monday, the Associated Press reports. The couple sought out Robbins to handle their split outside the public judicial system. Under California law, their separation won't become final until Oct. 2.

The couple, who were married for four-and-a-half years, separated in January and Aniston filed for divorce in March, claiming irreconcilable differences.

Since the separation, Pitt's involvement with his Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar Angelina Jolie has been the subject of intensity scrutiny, but neither Pitt nor Jolie has publicly commented on the relationship.

Aniston, however, had a good deal to say about her and Pitt's separation in the September issue of Vanity Fair. The 36-year-old actress said she was shocked by photos of her estranged husband cavorting with Jolie in Africa. "I’d be a robot if I said I didn’t feel moments of anger, of hurt, of embarrassment," Aniston said.

She said that there was a lot she didn’t understand about what had happened between her and Pitt, but added that she hoped one day they might be friends.
