Renée Zellweger and country star Kenny Chesney's brief marriage is now officially over. The couple's annulment was finalized with court papers filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
According to the legal papers, obtained by PEOPLE, Zellweger, 36, and Chesney, 37, waived their rights to motion for a new trial and the rights to appeal.
The Oscar-winning actress filed for the annulment on Sept. 14, just four months after their picturesque, beachside wedding in the Virgin Islands. Unlike a divorce, an annulment essentially erases a marriage, declaring it null, as if it had never happened in the first place. Zellweger signed the paperwork Nov. 18 and Chesney signed on Dec. 12. A judge granted that request Tuesday, effectively removing one of the more curious celebrity romances from the books.
Zellweger and Chesney met last January while both were working at the Concert of Hope for victims of the Asian tsunami. Chesney was performing at the event while Zellweger was answering phones.
The two were introduced, but it wasn't until Zellweger appeared onstage April 29 at one of Chesney's concerts in Jacksonville, Fla., and planted a kiss on the country singer that their romance was made public, PEOPLE reported. Less than two weeks later, the pair stole away to St. John in the Virgin Islands for a secret wedding in front of a handful of friends and family.
"I may well be the luckiest man alive," Chesney claimed at the time.
Just a few months later, the country star was singing a different tune and was left to piece together what happened. "I'm sad, I'm angry, and I'm hurt and confused," he told PEOPLE in November. "This is not what I envisioned my life to be six months ago."
Zellweger, for her part, remained guarded. "Kenny and I decided not to publicly discuss the details of our relationship because we felt that it would be a compromise of personal integrity," she said in a statement to PEOPLE. "I admire Kenny and am grateful for the strength he demonstrated in choosing to honor our decision despite the difficulties."
