Singer Sara Evans Accuses Husband of Adultery
In divorce papers filed Thursday in Williamson County, Tenn., Evans, 35, cites adultery as the grounds for divorce, along with irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct.
Evans alleges friend and former nanny to her children, Alison Clinton, is the woman with whom Schelske has had an affair, according to court documents.
She and Schelske, 43, married in 1993 and have three children ranging in age from 2 to 7.
In the papers, Evans also claims that Schelske, among other things, drank and smoked cigarettes in the presence of their children and frequently threatened her and told her that she is crazy.
She also requests, and is granted, a temporary restraining order.
Schelske responded to the allegations in a statement: "Sara and our three children are the most important people in my life. I have made the decision to forgive Sara for the unfortunate campaign that she and her publicity advisors are currently waging. I adamantly deny the allegations that are being made.
"Sara has unfortunately become a dramatically different person over the last year and it is something we have struggled to deal with. Sadly, it appears we have failed. The best I can do at this difficult time is ask that people of faith would pray for her and for my family. My greatest concern is for my children and the irreparable harm they are at risk of facing."
Schelske's spokesman, Christian Josi, told PEOPLE: "For now, we're very interested in letting Craig's statement speak for itself. Craig doesn't want to say anything outside of the courtroom yet because it's very early on in the process. But, there is much more to the story and there are two very different sides to the story."
But an attorney for Evans, Nashville-based John Hollins Sr., told PEOPLE on Sunday, "He (Schelske) was quoted in the press as saying he hadn’t done anything wrong and he wanted everybody to pray for Sara. Let me tell you what, everything we allege, we’ve got photographs to back up the allegations of the complaint."
On Thursday Evans's rep released a statement saying the singer had decided to leave Dancing with the Stars "to give her family her full attention at this difficult time."
She will address her departure to Dancing with the Stars fans on the Oct. 17 live telecast, which will likely be her final appearance on the show. ABC has no comment at this time on how Evans's departure will affect the rest of the competition or future broadcasts.
