Bye-Bye to Broadway Shows

Four Broadway shows that came up mostly empty-handed at the 1999 Tony Awards will close this weekend, including "The Civil War," an $8 million musical. Although "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" won two Tonys -- for performers Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart -- it has been struggling to find an audience since it opened in February. The musical revue based on the Charles Schulz comic strip will close Sunday after 150 performances. Two also-rans for the best-play prize, "Not About Nightingales" by Tennessee Williams and "The Lonesome West" by Martin McDonagh, will fold, too.

  • Two other shows will finish their runs at the end of the month. "The Sound of Music," now starring Richard Chamberlain as Capt. Von Trapp, ends its more than year-long run June 27. (Chamberlain will take the show on the road in August, starting in Minneapolis.) Also closing down on June 27 is "Night Must Fall," a revival of the 1930s thriller starring Matthew Broderick.
