Paul Newman has donated $25,000 to save the historic Lock Building in Norwalk, Conn., a closed lock factory built in 1856 that was being threatened by the wrecker's ball. Later this week plans will be unveiled to convert the facility it into a regional art center. (Several artists are already renting space in the building.) Earlier this year, Newman donated $50,000 toward preserving a piece of open space in Westport and made a rare stage appearance with his wife, Joanne Woodward, to benefit a land trust trying to save forest from destruction.
