Even a Latin heartthrob can misdirect one of cupid's arrows. When Ricky Martin was on Broadway in "Les Miserables" before his "La Vida Loca" breakthrough, reports the current issue of InTheater magazine, he had a backstage crush on one of the show's hairdressers. She was "a tall German woman who wasn't interested in the star," says the magazine. Ricky's co-star (he played the love-struck revolutionary Marius) Tamra Hayden recalled his saying at the time, "Isn't it sad that all those women are waiting at the stage door for me, and the one I want doesn't want me?"

  • In other news of Ricky, his "Ricky Martin" English-language debut CD has topped the 5-million sales mark, making it the industry's best-selling album for a Latin artist, according to the July certifications released by the Recording Industry Assn. of America.
