Smith Fights For Inheritance
Originally posted Wednesday July 22, 1998 12:00 AM EDT
Playboy model and actress Anna Nicole Smith was in court on Friday in Texas for the start of a trial that will determine if she is entitled to half of her late husband's estate, reports Reuters. The bountiful Smith married J. Howard Marshall, a Texas oil baron, in 1994 after they met at a Houston strip club where she was performing; she was 26, he was 89. After 14 months of marriage, he died, but not before Smith ("Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult") says he promised her half of his fortune. His will left his estate, estimated to be worth $500 million, to two of his sons. After Marshall's death, Smith fought his son Pierce for the right to his remains; the court ordered they split his ashes. The trial is expected to last at least two months.
