"The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "Pillow Talk" star Doris Day, 76, is one of the screen's great unsung heroines, but she also has a reputation for being something of a recluse. That rep clearly wasn't eradicated, kindly notes Variety columnist Army Archerd, by her not responding to a recent invitation to participate in the UCLA Film & TV Archives series devoted to her. The invite, says the Carmel, Calif.-based legend, is "probably still on my table with a stack of Christmas cards I'm still going through." As for why Day won't make the trip from northern California to southern, she told Archerd "I don't fly." As for driving down, Day, an avid animal activist who lives with innumerable strays, said, "I'd be away at night when it's time for me to feed my little angels. They are getting up in years. I've lost too many of them lately, and it's knocking me for a loop." Not that Day is doing a fast fade. She's preparing an album for Sony, says Archerd, containing her favorite songs. Among them: "For All We Know," "Sleepy Lagoon," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" -- but not one of her signatures, "Que Sera Sera." She thinks that one's for children.
