'Last Dance' No. 1 Movie

Despite the obituaries that have been written for the movie musical genre for the past 30 years, the MTV-motivated "Save the Last Dance," starring Julia Stiles as an aspiring ballerina and Sean Patrick Thomas as her hip-hop dancing boyfriend, shoved "Cast Away" (starring Tom Hanks) off the top of the box office island this weekend. So strong was the showing for "Dance," in fact, that it marked a record debut for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. It beat the previous $15.2 million take for "Varsity Blues" in 1999. Even at No. 2, however, "Cast Away" still performed strong. In just three weeks it has grossed $165.1 million, surpassing "Meet the Parents" to become the 5th-highest-grossing movie of 2000. This weekend's Top 10:
