A Very Brady Stage Union Complaint

Barry Williams, who played Greg Brady on the '70s sitcom "The Brady Bunch," filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board in Manhattan on Monday, charging Actors Equity with unfair labor practices. Williams, now 46, said that he was illegally fined $52,000 by the union in January for starring in a touring non-Equity production of "The Sound of Music." (He played Captain Von Trapp.) The show was picketed outside several of its venues on account of Williams's action. In the complaint, Williams and his representatives argue that the fine was illegal because in the previous September the actor had resigned from the union. But, argued Equity, he was still a member of the union when he began contract negotiations with his producers before then. According to Variety, Williams filed the charges with the assistance of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, a group that provides free legal aid to people claiming to be the victim of compulsory unionism abuses.
