Princess Diana: 40th Birthday Marked

Monday July 02, 2001 04:20 PM EDT

Sunday, July 1, would have marked the 40th birthday of the late Princess Diana. The event did not go unnoticed in her native England. Her brother, Earl Spencer, opened a new three-room exhibition at the 70-acre family estate of Althorp, dedicated to the charitable fund set up in his sister's name. "I do find the anniversaries particularly difficult, as do all our family," Spencer said late last week. "The fact that she would have been 40 has added to the poignancy this year, and I just hope we are doing the best we can for her without having her around any more." To mark Diana's birthday, children from London's Brompton Hospital lay flowers at the gates of London's Kensington Palace, the royal mansion where Diana used to live. Near to the residence, in Hyde Park, the site has finally been chosen for a national memorial to Diana, a spokesman the Diana Memorial Committee said on Friday. A $4.2 million fountain is due to be built on the shore of the park's Serpentine lake, along the Diana Memorial Walk, said the representative. Princess Diana was 36 when she was killed in a high-speed car crash in Paris in August of 1997.
