Victoria's Secret Show Too Hot for TV

Last Thursday night's primetime broadcast of "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" on ABC caused quite a few viewers to get their panties in a twist. The show, which aired at 9 p.m., featured a parade of lithe models sashaying down the runway in the latest styles of push-up bras, thong underwear, teddies, bustiers and the like. More than a few people who tuned in felt that the extravaganza seemed dangerously close to a soft-porn peepshow. ABC received calls and e-mails of complaint, as did the FCC, which will investigate whether indecency rules were violated, according to The Hollywood Reporter. FCC commissioner Michael Copps told reporters that his own daughter was offended. "She saw it and was upset," Copps said. "She's a new mother, and when her child gets (to a) TV age, he should see wholesome programming." Protesters from the National Organization of Women also voiced complaints. Sonia Ossorio, a NOW executive who attended the protest, was quoted in the New York Times as saying, "I think we need to keep questioning the ever-extending sexualization of women in mass media." Despite all the hoopla, ABC's broadcast didn't even beat its competition. With 12.4 million viewers, the show lagged behind "CSI" on CBS and NBC's "Will and Grace" and "Just Shoot Me."
