'Wedding' Sets Big Fat Video Record

Just another record-breaking day for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" writer, star and Oscar nominee Nia Vardalos.

The DVD version of the little $5 million movie that could (gross $240 million in North America alone, that is) has now set a DVD sales record in the romantic comedy genre, selling more than 4 million copies during its first five days out.

As a rental, the movie -- which is nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar -- also topped the charts last week, earning an estimated $19.56 million in only five days, reports the trade publication Video Store magazine.

That figure reportedly matches what another blockbuster, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," pulled in over seven days last year. (Meanwhile, Vardalos, 40, and most of her costars are preparing to invade the small screen next Monday with "My Big Fat Greek Life," a new midseason series on CBS.)

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the second best-selling comedy DVD of all time is believed to be the Reese Witherspoon movie "Sweet Home Alabama," which recently sold more than 2 million DVDs during its first day in release and reportedly sold more than 3 million in its first week. (Distributors do not always release sales figures.)

In other home-video news, Variety reports that plans are afoot to release syndicated TV sensations "Xena: Warrior Princess," starring Lucy Lawless, and "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," with Kevin Sorbo.

However, details -- such as how many episodes will be released, and when -- remain sketchy.

"Hercules" premiered in 1994 as a made-for-TV movie and then expanded into 100 episodes over six seasons. "Xena," a "Herc" spin-off that debuted as a series in 1995, lasted 130 episodes.
