This weekend belonged to "The Matrix Reloaded," which swept the box office with an estimate $93.3 million and became the highest-grossing R-rated flick ever, bettering the $58 million opening of 2001's "Hannibal."

While this sequel to 1999's "The Matrix" didn't outperform the opening weekend of "Spider-Man" -- which took in $115 million in its first three days last year -- it does now hold the record for the second highest-grossing opening ever.

The R-rating, which is considered to limit the potential audience, is due to a number of videogame-like violent scenes and a brief nude scene featuring stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Coming in a distant but still respectable second place was Eddie Murphy in the family oriented "Daddy Day Care." But the entry into the marketplace of "Matrix" (the third installment is due in November) easily sent its sci-fi rival, "X2: X-Men United," into third place. (Shed no tears: To date, "X2" has taken in a whopping $174 million.)
