Courtney Love seems to be in a courtroom more often than a recording studio these days.
The latest legal wrinkle: The former Hole singer is being sued for breach of contract (among other charges) by a California law firm that claims she owes them $228,926 for legal work, the Smoking Gun Web site reports.
According to the lawsuit, filed in Santa Barbara County Superior Court on Dec. 10, the law firm of Cappello & McCann says Love, 39, owes them for their work on her bitter and widely publicized (and since settled) two-year legal battle with her former record label, Universal Music Group.
After paying an initial retainer of $50,000, Love, on behalf of her company, Doll Head, Inc., used the firm from January 2001 through November 2002 and ran up a bill of nearly $200,000 -- and then ignored the tab, the suit alleges.
The firm claims the total bill comes to $228,926.49, which it now wants, plus further interest. Cappello & McCann also says Love should pay the expert witnesses who were hired in the case.
As the Smoking Gun notes, this is but the latest in a current litany of civil actions faced by Love, who is burdened by legal cases brought by former employees, a landlord and a Hawaiian spa that alleges she stiffed them on a bill of more than $15,000 for services rendered. She also was recently brought up on drug charges, though she's stated that she has no problem with substance abuse.
A lawyer for Love, who told Smoking Gun he had not seen the new complaint, declined comment on Cappello & McCann's charges.
