Kidman Honored at Post-Oscar Event

Not all the stars packed up and left for New Zealand right after the Oscars. Last year's Best Actress winner Nicole Kidman, who was a presenter Sunday night, remained in rainy Southern California, where Monday night she was honored by the Women's Cancer Research Fund for her work to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Kidman, 36, received the 2004 Courage Award at the event, held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills and chaired by Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, reports USA Today. Other celebs attending the dinner: Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Tobey Maguire and Liv Tyler (who reportedly showed up late), Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, as well as OutKast's Andre 3000.

Christina Aguilera performed the song "Beautiful," and Natalie Cole, who works with the Women's Cancer Research Fund, noted, "We've raised over $10 million."

Host Hanks, 47, who attempted an imitation of perennial emcee Bob Hope on the Oscarcast, proclaimed the filet mignon dinner the official end "of the trophy and tuxedo season. You're all overjoyed, I know."

Kidman, wearing a vintage Valentino suit at the event, told USA Today about her Oscar night the evening before. "I was in bed by 12:30," Kidman said. "I went to the Vanity Fair party, and then I went home. Today, I was just hanging out with my kids."

On the more serious issue at hand, Kidman's mother was struck with breast cancer when her now-celebrated daughter was 17.

"Obviously, my mother is a breast cancer survivor, and I've had a number of friends survive and not survive," she said. "It damages you, and it also gives you compassion for people. If I hadn't been an actor, I would have been a doctor."
