Love Slapped with Additional Charge

Chalk up another one for Courtney Love -- a misdemeanor charge, that is.

Although the rocker's trial for allegedly being under the influence of a controlled substance, has been postponed for a month pending the final results of a drug test, prosecutors in Los Angeles have filed a new charge of disorderly conduct against her, reports Reuters.

This new charge -- which accuses Love of endangering people in a public place while on drugs, says the prosecutor -- stems from her arrest last Oct. 2 outside the home of a boyfriend (record executive Jim Barber), where police said she was breaking windows in the middle of the night.

Hours after being released on bail, Love, 39, who last month released her latest album, "America's Sweetheart," was taken to a local hospital for what police called a "medical emergency" and was later charged separately in Beverly Hills with two counts of unlawful possession of prescription painkillers. A preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Jerry Baik, the prosecutor overseeing the case, said the charge was added to the original complaint in case prosecutors have difficulty making the earlier charge stick, according to Reuters. She also is charged separately in Beverly Hills Superior Court on two felony counts of drug possession (Hydrocodone and Oxycodone), reports the Associated Press.

An earlier postponement of the misdemeanor case occurred last month, when Love fired her attorney at the last minute, saying, "He wanted me to plead guilty to something I didn't do."

Her new lawyer, Michael Rosenstein, won an additional extension on Monday. Love was not in court for the session, says AP. The next hearing has been set for April 5, when Rosenstein will present his motion to have drug test results in the case barred as inadmissible.

If convicted, Love could face a sentence of 90 days to a year in jail. Alternatively, she could admit her guilt and sidestep jail by agreeing to undergo a program for drug treatment.

Love has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against her. She also is embroiled in a battle with family of her late husband, rocker Kurt Cobain, for custody of the couple's 11-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.
