Tom & Penelope Split After 3 Years
The Hollywood power couple of Cruise and Cruz, who often spent long periods away from each other while filming, go their separate ways.

Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have ended their three-year relationship, reps for the couple confirmed to PEOPLE today.
"They broke up at the end of January and it's amicable," says Lee Anne DeVette, Cruise's sister and publicist. Says Robert Garlock, Cruz's spokesman: "They remain good friends and still talk often." He adds that neither star is dating anyone else. "There is no other person involved."
According to a source close to the couple, "The relationship just ran its course and they decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore. Through most of the relationship they were both shooting movies in separate parts of the world."
After filming last year's "The Last Samurai" in New Zealand and Japan, Cruise, 41, shot the recently wrapped crime thriller "Collateral," set for release this summer; Cruz, 29, has also made several movies since they met, including last year's "Gothika" and the Italian film "Don't Move." When they weren't working, Cruise and Cruz sometimes retreated to his house in Telluride, Colo.
Garlock said Cruise's membership in the Church of Scientology had nothing to do with the split. Cruz is "not a Scientologist, but she has taken (church) courses and she's found them beneficial," he said.
This is the second high-profile split Cruise has endured recently. Earlier this month he parted ways with his longtime publicist, Pat Kingsley. She was replaced by DeVette, who has worked on the marketing of his films. Last week DeVette denied reports that Cruise fired Kingsley after they clashed over his support of Scientology, the L. Ron Hubbard-founded religion.
Cruise and Cruz met in 2000 while filming "Vanilla Sky," and began dating in 2001 after his 10-year marriage to Nicole Kidman ended earlier that year. (Kidman and Cruise share custody of their children, Isabella, 11, and Connor, 9.) Over the course of the relationship they denied numerous rumors that they were planning to marry and that she was pregnant.
Speculation that the couple was on the rocks ignited this year when Cruz didn't show up at the Jan. 25 Golden Globes ceremony, where Cruise was nominated for "The Last Samurai." In fact, Cruz had flown to Spain to be with her ailing father. "At the time, they were figuring out their relationship," says the source. Soon after, however, Cruise and Cruz quietly separated. She is now in Morocco filming the action movie "Sahara." Cruise is in pre-production on a third "Mission: Impossible."
