GLAAD Takes HBO's 'Angels' Under Wing

After its major wins at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year, the HBO miniseries "Angels in America" was honored again on Monday, as director Mike Nichols's epic adaptation of the Tony Kushner AIDS drama was nominated for this year's 15th annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards.

The awards will be presented at three separate ceremonies, March 27 in Los Angeles, April 12 in New York and June 5 in San Francisco.

In addition, reports Variety, the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" and Bravo reality TV hit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" were also highly prominent in the nominations, and special awards will be going to actresses Julianne Moore and Megan Mullally, as well as to cult director John Waters.

Those films that deal with gay and/or lesbian themes that received nominations, beside "Tuscan Sun," were "Bend It Like Beckham," "Die Mommie Die!," "Gasoline" (from Italy), "Yossi & Jagger" (Israel), "Madame Sata" (Brazil) and "Mambo Italiano" (Canada).

In addition to such evergreens as NBC's "Will & Grace" and HBO's recently wrapped "Sex and the City," outstanding comedy series nominees include "It's All Relative" (ABC), "Oliver Beene" (FOX) and "Reno 911!" (Comedy Central), says the trade paper.

The competition against "Angels in America" for outstanding TV movie or miniseries are "Cambridge Spies," "Tipping the Velvet," "Soldier's Girl" and "Normal."

Cable perennials "Queer as Folk" and "Six Feet Under" are up against FX's "Nip/Tuck," "Degrassi: The Next Generation" and "Playmakers" in the drama category.

"Queer Eye" is in the running in the new category of reality programming. The other nominees are "Boy Meets Boy," "The Amazing Race," "America's Next Top Model" and "The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet."
