Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal have split, Gyllenhaal's rep, Stephen Huvane, tells PEOPLE magazine.
"Kirsten and Jake remain the best of friends," Huvane says. "Details regarding when and why their romantic relationship stopped are not being provided, but suffice it to say it happened some time ago. They are still very close."
Dunst, 22, and Gyllenhaal, 23, began dating in September 2002, when they were introduced by his sister, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. The couple later shared a $1.7 million Los Angeles home and even adopted a German Shepherd mix puppy.
Still, Dunst told PEOPLE in May that there wouldn't be wedding bells anytime soon. "Oh, I'm too young to get married," the Spider-Man 2 star said. "Seriously, I'm 22 years old. It's so annoying that they put pressure on you."
For his part, Gyllenhaal – who most recently starred in the disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow – took the couple's popularity with the paparazzi in stride. "Kirsten and I know what's real and what isn't," he told PEOPLE. "We know what happens when you are both actors."
