Following a whirlwind six-month courtship, Lavigne, 27, announces her surprise engagement to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, 37, who popped the question with a 14-carat diamond ring. The couple first crossed paths in February, collaborating on a song for Lavigne's fifth studio album. "A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together," a Lavigne pal tells PEOPLE.
