Cooper tackles the role of high school teacher Pat Solitano, who attempts to get his life back on track after a stay at a mental institution, in Silver Linings Playbook, which costars Jennifer Lawrence. "It scared me, I didn't know if I could be that vulnerable on film," the actor tells The Telegraph of first reading the script. "I just took a leap of faith with [director David O. Russell] and we did it." The part earns Cooper Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar nominations.
Following his split from Zoë Saldana, Cooper begins dating British model Suki Waterhouse, 20, with whom he is spotted on set in Boston. Though both stars stay mum on their budding romance, Waterhouse accompanies Cooper to Paris in April, and to the Spike Guys' Choice Awards in June.
Reteaming with Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell, Cooper plays ambitious FBI agent Richie DiMaso, who recruits a con man (Christian Bale) and his mistress (Amy Adams) to help him entrap corrupt politicians. The role, for which the actor spends three hours in makeup each morning curling his hair, earns him Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
