Audiobooks are a great alternative to video games and a great option for kids who can't yet read on their own, or get carsick when reading. (They're also great for parents who need to drive or take care of other kids.) Most can be downloaded from iTunes or Audible.com.
We Like: For ages 2-5: Brown Bear & Friends by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle, read by Gwyneth Paltrow ($15). For ages 4-8: The One and Only Shrek by William Steig, read by Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci ($15). For ages 8-12: The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, read by Tony Shalhoub ($15).
