After vowing to start "a new chapter" in 2011, a series of public stumbles gets Aguilera's New Year off to a rocky start. After flubbing the lyrics to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, the singer is arrested alongside new beau Rutler for public intoxication. After the incident, friends air their concerns, telling PEOPLE, " She's not being honest with herself."
Aguilera comes on board as a music coach for NBC's new singing competition, The Voice, alongside Cee Lo Green, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. "To be given the opportunity to help shape new artists' careers and mentor them to see their dreams come to fruition is a task I welcome with open arms," she says. Three seasons later, the pop star announces her plans to take a break from the show to promote her new album, Lotus. "By pursuing my first passion of music during the break, I am also able to come back and offer even more to my team on The Voice in the future," she says in a statement.
After more than three years of dating, Aguilera and Rutler get engaged. "He asked and I said……," the singer Tweets, posting a photo of the pair holding hands and debuting her engagement ring. A week later, PEOPLE confirms the couple is also set to welcome their first child together. "They're very much in love and are really excited to take this next step!" says a source.
