"Many people have more talent for happiness than I do," Carson (with third wife Joanna, in 1979) once said wistfully. "But I think I'm getting the hang of it." Of the late-night star, second wife Joanne said, "I found him to be a very caring, sensitive, empathetic individual. You have to understand, he is shy, he has had a midwestern upbringing. It's not his style to let it all hang out."
