The two (in Rome on April 29) first met at Cruise's L.A. office in April, a source tells PEOPLE, where Holmes talked about a potential movie part. "They hit it off," says the insider, and he later asked her for a date. That month they debuted their romance in Italy, but their fast-paced love wasn't without its critics: Besides "Free Katie" T-shirts, naysayers suggested the coupling was a publicity stunt.
