The father and ex-member of the military came to Virginia Tech after having worked at Johns Hopkins University, Ohio State University, the University of Virginia and Wake Forest University. Despite Granata's heavy workload, "He still found time to spend with his family, and he coached his children in many sports and extracurricular activities," Engineering professor Demetri P. Telionis told the AP of Granata, who was ranked among the top 5 biomechanics researchers in the country.
