The avid long-distance runner was remembered by his grandfather Thomas as a "studious kid" who liked to tinker with machinery. Herbstritt, who grew up on a small farm in central Pennsylvania where his father raised sheep and steer, was a VT graduate student who had ambitions to pursue a career in environmental work.
